Hello

Thanks for your enquiry

- I will ask some of the other members about your problem but I would suspect that that either the hen and or the chicks have diarrhoea or digestive upset and this is causing the problems. This can be a big problem esp. as the chicks are so young, they can be prone to dehydration.

When they squirt their droppings over the edge of the nest some can get stuck and can get onto the hen as well as the chick. The heat of her body at "brooding" temperature is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria if the nest area is wet and soiled. So possibly put a clean dry nest in but be aware that some birds won't accept you touching or changing their nest area as it will "smell" differently and they may abandon the chicks!

I would suggest that you get some PRO-BIOTIC (which repopulates the digestive system with healthy bacteria, which is necessary after a bout of diarrhoea - it's in powder form and can be added to the water and to your egg or soft food. It's a bit like Yakult or Actimel for humans Either get this from your pet shop or go on-line Birdcare Company's Website address for
Vits, minerals + Calcium supplements etc. click on this link : www.birdcareco.com

It's a good idea to use a Pro-biotic once per week anyway throughout the year to keep the digestive system healthy.

Details can be found on our Website on "Misc. Information" page   http://www.solwayparrotclub.co.uk/Misc.info.FRAMES_1.htm

- also check out our Minor Ailments page. http://www.solwayparrotclub.co.uk/minor_ailments.htm#Diarrhoea

I would also suggest you keep your birds off green food until the problem resolves.

If it wouldn't stress the hen you could catch her up GENTLY, bathe her rear end with luke-warm water & cotton wood (remember she will be tender so keep the temp lower rather than too warm) then dry thoroughly before apply a thin smear of vaseline (as you would with a human baby) but make sure she is properly dry first otherwise you are sealing moisture IN rather than keeping it OUT!

I hope this is helpful to you - if you have any further queries please feel free to get in touch.

The Solway Parrot Website

Hi Babs,

Thanks so much for this, a great help, I can go off to Home Base and look for some.
I have lots of birds, I take in abused ones as well as my own big Parrots and I have 5 little battered Budgies,
someone gave me a large cage on wheels for outside and I would like them to be out in the sun and air once I have made it safe for them.
They deserve it. If you have a minute you can see some of my Parrots and the website I have made.

I shall keep your site so that I can pop in with any queries - thanks again.

Hi Pam from Birmingham

Thanks for yr enquiry – and I’m pleased that u like the Website.
Any paint that doesn’t have a lead content is o.k. (not many do these days actually)

I personally have used Hammerite on some of my metal Aviaries – no problem and you can get it in spray or paint-on form
(be aware the paint-on variety dries very quickly, almost as quickly as you are putting it on, so can get a little claggy)
I used the “silver” spray-on version and the result was really good and it took no time at all.
I would advise you to use gardening gloves if you do use the spray tho. cos the stuff that makes it spray can “freeze” your finger that you press the trigger with
and it makes it a bit sore if you have a big area to do.

Do not spray near any other birds and wear a “Dust mask” yourself to avoid breathing in the vapour.
If birds are close (but not too close) then keep the spray nozzle fairly close to the metal and do it in short bursts to prevent the paint running.

Good luck

Hello,

I stumbled on your site while searching around for safe paint and I love it, so simple and yet so very helpful, I am passing it on to friends who would like the tips on here.

Would you have any idea as to whether the are is safe paint around I could use.  Someone has given me a little metal aviary, sort of hexagonal and I would like to rub it down and make it look smarter before I put the Budgies in.

Many thanks,

Pam in Birmingham.

Hi It sounds very much like Billy the Budgie has sustained some sort of brain damage, which has affected his balance, when he has flown in the window. Birds can often break their necks when they fly into windows, as they fly with such force becos they think it’s an open space they are flying into. He could possibly have sustained some nerve damage too, which would explain his inability to perch, poor leg co-ordination and poor vision. It all points towards a head injury. As in humans, they can improve but usually progress can be slow and you may have to improvise things in his cage to help him while he is incapacitated i.e. put his perches and food at lower levels. He will appear lethargic, as he is not himself and if he is unco-ordinated then it will be an effort to do things that were easy and natural before. I would seriously suggest you find a SPECIALIST AVIAN VET and take your pet, as anything we can say this end will only be supposition. I wish you luck and let us know how you get on? Regards Babs H. Hi Eliz. We have consulted directly with Versele Laga Seed Suppliers and they recommend Budgie Tonic seed Mixed with a Neophema mix + plain canary seed. The recommended Handrearing Food is V.L. N21. One of our S.P. Members, who was a prolific Breeder of Parrotlets, also recommends: _ The above seeds (+ soaked seeds + EMP Egg Food + grated carrot ) 1 - 2 times p.week. Daily when feeding young. + Broccoli, Apple, Grapes, Sweetcorn (frozen and cooked in boiling water 2 -3 mins in microwave) or tinned and drained then rinsed (to remove the added salt and sugars, b4 feeding). Cuttle Fish, Iodine Blocks and fine Oyster Grit to be freely available. Calcivet to soft Food x1 per week (Breeding season). I hope this is helpful to you and good luck with your Breeding Season.

The person who usully looks after my blue and gold macaw when I'm on holiday has been taken ill and I'm having a problem finding alternative local accommodation for the last week in May. Do you know of anyone who "boards" birds within a reasonable driving distance from Annan? I've tried the local vet with no luck Leslie McCulloch

CHECK OUT OUR Ads page - there is an Ad there for someone who Boards Birds locally.
